The Scenic Route
Kathalina Plummer Thorpe
She/Her/Hers
Sometimes life takes us down winding paths and through unexpected back roads. My journey as an artist has been one such as this. It was the poem by Robert Frost that I was required to memorize and recite in the 6th grade that has left its imprint on my journey as an artist and student.
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
Whether by choice, destiny, or sheer force of will my work as a designer has been influenced by the journey.
I am a 3rd year MFA Candidate in Scenic Design at Kent State University's School of Theater and Dance, building on my foundation from my BFA in Theater from Valdosta State University, which I earned in 2021.

Aesthetic Meets Passion
I am a theater practitioner with two decades of experience, and I am committed to telling stories from the ground up. My approach is firmly anchored in rigorous script work, and I actively apply my viewpoints training to shape the topography and movement of the set, ensuring the show's success through movement both visually and for the actors. This methodology empowers me as a world-builder in field of theater. I very much enjoy more elaborate and textural art. Some have referred to my design style as organic, crunchy, or more is more. What I embrace when I design is the ability to get into the design and manipulate the idea with my hands. Like a sculptor might clay. 3-D drafting allows me to mold and shape the space more readily and gives me the visualization of the real thing quickly and efficiently.
I am known for integrating green theater practices and providing Neurodivergent skill-building and training opportunities in my work, reinforcing my dedication to inclusivity and sustainability. I see so much opportunity in building strong foundations within a students early years of education through theater. I have taught a variety of ages from age 3 to adults and the passion is still the same. Imaginative play, Problem solving, critical thinking within a collaborative space, and the ability to connect with others are key skills that theater provides us. These skills are integral for living in a social society and it brings me great joy to help provide accessibility to all in my charge when I teach. At the end of the day my sand box is communal and I want everyone who loves and appreciates theater to feel welcome in joining me at any level of skill.
